Opportunity S9: Reducing Uncertainty in Ground-Motion Prediction through Data and Simulations

We seek a Mendenhall Postdoctoral Scholar to investigate uncertainties in ground motion within the framework of ground-motion prediction equations, with an emphasis on how characterizing wave-propagation path effects can be used to reduce uncertainty in ground-motion estimates. Promising avenues of research include observational approaches to search for empirical propagation effects; connection of physical parameters or theoretical models of earthquake physics with the observed path effects; modeling and simulation of ground motion; and validation of simulated ground motions path effects with observations. The postdoctoral researcher should have experience in earthquake/engineering seismology, either observationally or through simulations, and an interest in connecting realistic seismological models with empirically-based GMPEs used in engineering practice.
