What is the Seismic Design Competition?

This Seismic Design Competition for Undergraduates in Civil and Structural Engineering is being made possible through support from the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) and the volunteer efforts of the Student Leadership Council (SLC). PEER's mission is to develop and disseminate performance-based earthquake engineering. Nine universities on the west coast are associated with PEER, they include: UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UCLA, UC Irvine, UCSD, Caltech, Stanford, USC and University of Washington.

The competition is an opportunity to design, analyze, fabricate, and subject a scaled model of a high-rise office building to earthquake motions.  Teams will construct the model using balsa wood. Judging will be based on the annual income of the building.  The annual income will be based on rental income, initial costs, and seismic cost.  There are also architecture, poster, and presentation components to the scoring. See rules (link) for more details. PPT presentation(link) on history and scope of 2006 competition.

The objectives of this Third Annual Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition sponsored by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center are:

  • To provide civil engineering undergraduate students an opportunity to do a hands on project within a performance-based seismic design framework by designing and fabricating a cost effective frame structure that performs well under earthquake simulation.
  • To promote the study of earthquake engineering amongst undergraduates.
  • To build the awareness of the versatile activities at PEER among the civil engineering students and faculty at the core universities as well as the general public in order to encourage nation-wide participation.

To increase the attentiveness of the value and benefit of the Student Leadership Council (SLC) representatives and officers among the core universities for the recruitment and development of SLC, which is a key liaison between PEER students and the PEER center.

The competition will be held on April 20th and 21st, 2006 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.  This event will be held in conjunction with the Eighth U.S. National Conference on Earthquake Engineering, (April 18th - 22nd, 2006) commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.  This conference will be a joint gathering of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), Seismological Society of America (SSA), and Disaster Resistant California (DRC).  Undergraduate teams are strongly encouraged to attend the sessions of this unique mega conference.  More information about this conference is available online at: http://www.eeri.org.  Accommodations for competing teams will be provided on the nights of April 19th and 20th at a hotel within walking distance of the Moscone Center.

The competition will be open to teams from the other two earthquake engineering research centers, in the U.S.: the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER) and the Mid America Earthquake Engineering Research

Center (MAE).  MCEER is headquartered at the State University of New York, at Buffalo.  MAE is headquartered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Only teams from PEER universities will be eligible for PEER financial support
