Help PEER Digitize Thousands of Rare Slides

Thousands of slides need to be digitized

Professors Stephen Mahin and Vitelmo Bertero

In 2018, the NISEE-PEER Earthquake Engineering Library received a generous donation of several thousand earthquake images in slide format from two world-renowned pioneers in the field of earthquake engineering, UC Berkeley Emeritus Professors, Vitelmo Bertero  and Stephen Mahin.

These slides from the 1970’s onward provide a unique glimpse into earthquake damaged structures from around the world, rare lecture materials, and experimental earthquake testing at PEER facilities. As the recent PHI Challenge demonstrated, there is a growing interest in the area of damage detection using machine learning. Thus, these rare photographs from decades ago would greatly add to the damage database.

PEER would like to digitize these historic images and documents and make them accessible to the earthquake engineering community and the public by adding them to the NISEE-PEER Online Archive.

If you would like to support this digitization effort, please consider donating to the PEER fund during the Cal Big Give fundraiser on Wednesday, March 13 at 9 p.m. PST to Thursday, March 14, 2019 at 9 p.m. PST.

Post to Twitter or Facebook the unique reason for your donation to be entered into the Big Give social media contest!  Make a one-time or recurring gift . All donations are tax-deductible.  All those who donate to the PEER fund during the Big Give will receive free access to the online archive for one year.  (Annual membership is $25.) Donors of $500 or more will receive a lifetime membership.

Although the Big Give is a one-day fundraising effort, you can give to PEER anytime!
