The Structural Engineering Association of Northern California (SEAONC) honored former PEER Director Steve Mahin during the June Awards dinner meeting. SEAONC President Dick Dreyer bestowed the Helmut Krawinkler Award to Steve Mahin, Professor at UC Berkeley. Jim Malley, Senior Principal at Degenkolb Engineers, provided Mahin’s introduction.

Steve Mahin is the Byron L. and Elvira E. Nishkian Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of StructuralEngineering, Mechanics and Materials at UC Berkeley, where he specializes in the behavior of structures, earthquake engineering, hybrid testing, and performance-based design of structures for earthquakes and other extreme loads. He is the former (2009-2015) Director of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research (PEER) Center, and is a past L-R: SEAONC Board Director and an Honorary member of SEAONC. Mahin is currently Director of the NHERI Computational Modeling and Simulation Computation Center (SimCenter) for computational modeling and simulation of the effects of natural hazards on the built environment. Supported by a five-year, $10.9-million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the SimCenter is part of the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI), a distributed, multi-user national facility that will provide natural hazards engineers with access to research infrastructure.
A recipient for the Helmut Krawinkler Award for outstanding leadership in implementing state-of-the-art research into practice is determined by the SEAONC Board of Directors. The award is presented to acknowledge those individual members (academia or practicing engineers) who have applied and adapted pioneering academic research to the structural engineering practice.
