2019 Blind Prediction Contest

Submission Deadline: November 20, 2019

Important Dates

  • November 12, 2019: Deadline to submit questions

  • November 20, 2019: Deadline for submissions and end of competition

  • November 27, 2019: Notification of winners

  • January 16-17, 2020: Public announcement of winners at the PEER Annual Meeting
PEER is organizing a blind prediction contest to predict the maximum bi-directional seismic response of a four-column rocking podium structure excited by artificially generated ground motions applied by a shaking table. The rocking podium structure was designed by the ETH Zurich team led by Prof. Michalis Vassiliou and Prof. Bozidar Stojadinovic.

The tests were conducted using the 6-dof shaking table located at the Earthquake and Large Structures (EQUALS) Laboratory of the University of Bristol as directed by Prof. George Mylonakis and Prof. Anastasios Sextos under the SERA transnational access project "3DROCK: Statistical Verification and Validation of 3D Seismic Rocking Motion Models”.The project leading to this application has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 730900.

The contest is open to teams from the practicing structural engineering community and the academic and research community (including students). International entries are welcome. The top winners will be recognized and awarded.

The prediction contest will be “blind” and compare analytical response “predictions” with those measured during experimental testing. The closest predictions to the test results will be awarded.

While names and affiliations of all participating teams will be identified, results will be presented anonymously (unlabeled), except for those of the “winning” entries.

Winners will be announced and awarded at the PEER Annual Meeting to be held at UC Berkeley on January 16-17, 2020.

Due date for submission of results is Wednesday, November 20, 2019 11:59 (PST)
