Palermo2025 PEER Annual Meeting Speaker Bio: Alessandro Palermo is a Professor in Structural Engineering at UC San Diego, Jacobs School of Engineering. Alessandro Palermo is a Professor of Structural Engineering at UC San Diego. Prior to joining UCSD, he was a professor at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and began his academic career at Politecnico di Milano. He holds three patents and has authored over 450 publications in concrete bridges, timber buildings, and seismic-resilient systems. Listed among the top 2% most cited civil engineers (SCOPUS), Palermo has received international recognition including the ASCE Alfred Noble Prize and the IABSE Outstanding Paper Award. He is a Fellow of IABSE and Engineering New Zealand and serves on several professional boards. He co-chaired the 2024 fib Symposium in Christchurch. A passionate educator, he earned multiple teaching awards at Canterbury, including “Professor of the Year.” His work bridges cutting-edge research and practical innovation in structural resilience and infrastructure sustainability.
